Many patients who are considering treatment to straighten their teeth have the same questions and concerns.
If you have any other queries about our teeth straightening options, please get in touch and we’ll be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.
The straightening process doesn’t hurt, but you may experience a little discomfort when your braces are fitted or adjusted over the course of your treatment. This will only last for a couple of days at most, when you might want to consider eating softer foods. Over-the-counter pain relief will help relieve any symptoms.
The time it takes to straighten your teeth will vary, depending on the treatment option you choose and the results you are looking to achieve. Some patients may be suitable for our short-term solution, which can take as little as 8 – 16 weeks, others may be better suited to our Six Month Smiles treatment. Another option could be fixed braces, which can take between 18 – 36 months to straighten your teeth.Invisalign clear aligners also provide discreet option for both short term and comprehensive teeth straightening options. If you are considering treatment, your dentist will be able to recommend the most suitable options for you and give you an idea of timescales based on your individual care needs.
Again, this can vary depending on the straightening treatment you are having, but you are likely to need to come into the clinic around every 4 – 8 weeks. This will give your dentist a chance to check on the progress of your treatment and make any adjustments that are necessary, which could include tightening wires for our fixed braces, or issuing new clear aligners if you are using the Invisalign system.
Orthodontic treatment for adults is becoming more and more popular, and all of the options we offer are suitable for adults. We know that many of our patient’s wish for straighter teeth, but are put off by the thought of visible treatment and a lengthy process. Recent developments mean there are some fantastic discreet options available, ideal for those who are concerned that straightening treatment might be too obvious at work or socially.Your dentist can recommend which straightening treatments are most suitable for you, based on your individual requirements and circumstances.
If you have fixed braces, it is important to be aware that some hard or crunchy foods can damage or break your brace, so we would recommend that you cut raw fruit and vegetables into small pieces, and look to avoid hard sweets.
For treatments such as Invisalign, you will be able to remove your clear aligners while you eat, however it is important to try to wear them for at least 22 hours every day in order to get the most effective results.
If you have fixed braces, your dentist will help you to understand the importance of excellent oral hygiene while the braces are in place. Plaque can easily build up on the teeth around the brackets if they are not carefully cleaned after every meal. As plaque is a breeding ground for bacteria which attacks the teeth, extra vigilance is extremely important, as it will help to reduce the chances of damage or staining.
For removable treatments such as Invisalign, you will be able to remove your clear retainers so you can clean your teeth properly and eat as normal. Whatever straightening treatment you choose, we would recommend you attend regular hygiene therapy appointments, as they will be particularly helpful to get a thorough deep clean.
