Maintain a beautiful, healthy smile for life

At Highfield Dental & Facial Clinic in Southampton we want to help you maintain a beautiful, healthy smile for life and regular dental hygiene appointments can help you do just that.

During your first dental hygiene appointment, your hygienist will recommend how often you should attend.

Most patients will benefit from two hygiene appointments per year, but more frequent visits may be suitable for you if you suffer with gum disease or periodontitis.

At Highfield Dental & Facial Clinic we strongly believe that no one should feel embarrassed about any aspect of their dental health – we are here to help, never judge. We treat every patient as an individual, so your dental hygiene care will always be tailored to your unique needs in order to achieve exceptional outcomes.

Why should I see a dental hygienist?

Hygiene therapy is one of the most effective ways to prevent tooth decay and gum disease, and it can also help to reduce bad breath, an embarrassing problem for many people.

Taking care of these areas of oral health, and learning how to clean your teeth properly will stop more serious problems happening in the future, such as losing a tooth or even bone loss in the jaw.

What will happen during my dental hygienist appointment?

When you come to see our dental hygienists, you will have time to discuss your dental health and receive gentle, individual care.

During your dental hygiene appointment, your hygienist will carry out a thorough teeth cleaning. Even the most diligent brushers will find that there are some parts of the mouth that can’t be reached with normal toothbrushing, so this is where you can get a deep clean, below the gum line if necessary. The scale and polish technique is designed to remove tartar, which is a hardened plaque that cannot be removed by brushing alone.

Your dental hygienist will also carefully check for signs of gum disease or mouth cancer. Gum disease usually develops without any pain, so most people aren’t aware of it, however most adults in the UK do have some form of gum disease (it is more common as we get older). Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, so identifying and treating it as soon as possible will really help you to keep your natural smile.

Time is never an issue, you never feel there's someone waiting in the waiting room.

Why should I take gum disease seriously?

If gum disease is left untreated for a long time, it can be difficult to get it under control.

There are two main types of gum disease – periodontitis and gingivitis. Gingivitis can cause bad breath and bleeding when brushing, and can lead to the more serious type of gum disease, periodontitis.

Periodontitis is when the tissues that support and hold the teeth in place become infected, causing damage to the jawbone and ultimately, loss of the tooth or teeth.

Gum disease can be treated and reversed with a combination of hygiene appointments and a robust home care regime. Your dental hygienist will be able to provide advice and tips on how to boost your oral care between hygiene appointments. Periodontitis cannot be reversed but the symptoms can be managed with advanced gum care by your dental hygienist.

We’ll show you how to practice good dental hygiene

Our team strongly believes that no one should ever feel embarrassed about anything they are experiencing when it comes to oral health, or how to properly and effectively clean teeth.

In fact, many adults have never been shown how to brush or floss correctly.

Once you start to attend regular hygiene therapy appointments you will receive the support you need to achieve a healthy mouth. Your dental hygienist will share the best ways to look after your teeth and gums at home, by showing you different tools and techniques most suitable for your own specific needs. Every patient and every mouth is different, and we will always treat you as an individual – there is no one size fits all approach here.
